A large new-build manor house, lacking architectural integrity, stands exposed above the beach, offering little privacy and making no acknowledgment of the landscape, its surroundings, or the way the estate functions. Our solutions for the estate revolved around using the house as a pivotal anchor for the site’s reinvention.
The manor house has been reclothed in a new skin, stripping away its pastiche aesthetic and grounding it within the landscape through carefully considered materiality. The grounds have been reimagined, balancing formal structure with natural fluidity. At the rear, the existing orchard’s rigid geometry informs the placement of a wellness pavilion, which is seamlessly connected through formal landscaping, softened with informal organic planting.
Facing the sea, the front gardens have been transformed into resilient coastal grasslands, where salt-tolerant plants thrive in the well-drained soil. Large sculptural rock formations link the planting to the natural aesthetic of the beach while also introducing a sense of privacy for the manor.
As the site descends towards the shore, the landscape becomes increasingly informal, blending into the coastal terrain. Nestled into this setting, a new boathouse is discreetly positioned to preserve uninterrupted sea views from the manor. More than a functional space, it becomes a retreat offering a place for relaxed gatherings and lazy days spent by the water.
