Eastern House

Having lived abroad in various East Asian cities, our client wanted their permanent home on the Isle of Wight to capture some of the aesthetic they’d become so familiar with and had grown to love.  They purchased a 1960’s house which was initially built relatively cheaply and to meet the climate challenge would need extensive remodelling; a deep retrofit.

A cost benefit analysis quickly indicated that it would be better to build from the ground up when all things were considered.  The brief to Mattinson Associates was to maximise the many benefits the site of their new home provided while drawing inspiration from the Far East.

As principal architect, Lindsay Mattinson, said, “having started my career working in Kuala Lumpur, it was exciting designing a home for the Isle of Wight which would draw on this aesthetic while being sensitive to the site and climate of the Isle of Wight.”
