Creating architecture rooted in the Andaman for the British south coast, while respecting local climate and constraints offers an opportunity to push beyond the expected. Here, sustainability is not just a feature but a philosophy, returning to the fundamentals of working with nature: natural ventilation, passive cooling, and thermal mass heating. This is off grid living reimagined drawing from traditional wisdom yet expressed through contemporary form and aesthetics.
At the heart of the design lies a central courtyard, a living, breathing core around which the house revolves. Expansive glazing dissolves the boundary between indoors and out yet is veiled by sculptural vertical louvres offering both privacy and protection from solar heat. The spaces between and around the built form are sculpted with intention, creating quiet, intimate retreats and tranquil outdoor rooms.
Rough-hewn local stone, laid in a free and natural pattern, stands against the polished precision of cut stone and the warmth of rich brown timber. The material palette is both grounding and evocative, speaking a language of place, one that whispers of distant shores while feeling deeply at home.
