RIBA Isle of Wight Commendation awarded for the Renovation, Extension and Remodelling of The Briars!
Mattinson Associates were proud to receive a RIBA Award of Merit for the creative design work and careful execution with fantastic attention to detail at The Briars, Seaview as part of the RIBA Isle of Wight Design and Conservation Awards 2017.The Briars was originally constructed in the late 1800’s and is 1/2 of a pair of semi-detached houses set on a particularly suburban road in Seaview. It has been added to on at least two previous occasions with a two storey extension in red brick and a later poorly constructed single skin kitchen extension with monopitch roof. The original property looked tired and the internal space did not cater for modern-day living. The owners commissioned Mattinson Associates to provide a design to streamline the internal layout, improve the function of spaces and update the look of the property to sensitively bring it in to the 21st century, whilst still remaining one of a pair. The design successfully re-interprets the architecture to provide a contemporary solution that is still in keeping and works successfully as 1/2 of a pair of houses. Daylight is improved throughout the houses and small spaces are cleverly transformed to create useable spaces and a wonderful modern home. The judges felt that the quality of design was enhanced by the installation of glazed doors which merge the separation between the internal and external spaces creating a successful link with the extensive garden area without damaging the neighbouring properties and their privacy. Moreover, the excellent balance between the new extension and the preserved existing construction was favoured by the judges, commenting on the architect’s ability to achieve great quality detailing. It is exciting to see projects as modest as this with such a high level of attention to detail.
