A to Z of building your own home... I

Ionic OrderMost ancient Roman and Greek buildings are now in ruins, however a lot of those still exist because of the good architecture. Ionic Order is one of three orders of classical and traditional architecture, alongside the Corinthian and the Doric orders. The Ionic Order is defined by the Ionic column. In ancient Greece and Egypt, buildings were usually made with many columns supporting the roof. The column was predominantly the architectural staple for both Greece and Egypt as both a artistic and practical point of view. The column is made up of several different parts that all interlink with each other. The Base is the stone platform at the bottom of the column. On top of the base is the Shaft, which is the long part with groves running down the sides. To the top of the column, there is something called the Capital which is the decorative stone that bears the weight of the roof. The defining Ionic order of the Ionic column is the Volute which is the spiral capital of the Ionic column. The history of the Ionic order was developed in the mid-6th century BCE by Ionian Greeks on the islands near present day Turkey. By the 5th century, it became very popular in mainland Greece and the surrounding Islands. However, the first time it was used on a major temple was for the Temple of Hera on Samos, and that was built around the 570 BCE by the Greek architect Rhaikos. Interior Architecture & DesignersInterior ArchitectsInterior Architecture is the design of a space which has been created by structural boundaries and the human interaction within these boundaries. This can also be the initial design for adaptive reuse of the building shell. Interior architecture is a not a profession, but is a subject. As you're most probably aware, the term 'architect' is protected like doctor and cannot be used by anyone who does not have the specific qualifications and accreditation. Interior architects would have had to study at University for 5 + years and then decided to specialise in the internal design and not the overall design process. Interior architecture requires designers to consider everything to do with the building of an interior space which will in turn affect the human habitation, including materials, finishes, electrical requirements, plumbing and lighting along with intelligent use of space.Interior DesignersInterior Design is the art and science of enhancing the interiors. Interior Designers do not have to be qualified like the interior architects, they would merely have had to study at University. Many would have studied a degree in that field and decided to concentrate on this and not architecture as a whole. In short, interior designers may decorate, but decorators do not design. Architects can be interior Architects as-well, however if you have the right Architect on your project you do not need to employ an interior Architect or Designer to do the interiors; unless the Architect has chosen not to include this element of work in their services.
