Beacon | The Young Designers Award 2016 in association with RIBA IW

This fantastic competition is run for children and young people on the Isle of Wight. It is open to 5-18 year olds and is organised in association with the Isle of Wight branch of the Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA IW).The competition was founded in 2013 by Lindsay Mattinson to engage young people and the community in discussion about architecture and the built environment. The popularity of the competition has grown rapidly over the years, and this year around 400 entries were received. The Young Designers Award has the support of many schools on the Island and is often integrated into the design technologies or art curriculums, thereby increasing the students' exposure to architecture and design. The competition calls for creative responses to a set brief based around an Island landmark. Competitors use a range of medium to create three dimensional models, produce drawings and write a short description of their projects. This year's brief has focused around designing a new use for the sadly dilapidated pier in Totland. The judges were overwhelmed by the imagination and creativity displayed in the designs with ideas ranging from planetariums to a navy base! The winning entries this year in each age category are as follows:5-6 Years1st - Rafe Ball, age 6, The Rainbow, Ryde Fiveways2nd - Leo Death, age 6, The Rev Rev Pier, Ryde Fiveways3rd - James Travers Garety, age 5, 360° Pier, Godshill Primary7-8 years1st - Charlie Whittle, age 8, Gymnastics World, Ryde Junior2nd - Angus Middleton-Leal, age 8, Under the Pier, Ryde Junior3rd - Alice Holyoake, age 8, Floating Zoo, Ryde Junior9-10 years1st - Lorelai Walker, age 9, Totland Pier, Lanesend Primary2nd - Daisy Dyer, age 10, Pier of the Future Pier of the Past, Ryde Junior3rd - Tess Leyland, age 9, Wight Space, Ryde JuniorCommendation - Theodora Travers, age 9, Planetarium Pier, Godshill PrimaryCommendation - Patrick Mattinson, age 9, The Navy Pier, Ryde Junior11-12 yearsJoint 1st - Taylor Millard, age 12, Totland Tree Top Pier, The Island Free SchoolJoinst 1st - Lucy Bayliss, age 12, Splash Attack, The Island Free School2nd - Fay Murray-Smith, age 12, Totland Cubetangular, The Island Free School3rd - Rachel Lock, age 12, Wave Cruiser, The Island Free SchoolCommendation - Samuel Legg, age 11, Paradise Island, The Island Free SchoolCommendation - Ethan Bell, age 12, Jungle Pier, The Island Free SchoolCommendation - Maia Outlaw, age 11, The Gem Palace, The Island Free School13-18 years1st - Lucy Holloway, age 14, Totland Botanical Gardens, Ryde Senior2nd - Lydia Bryant, age 13, Totland Pier Water Experience, The Island Free School3rd - Eden Grundy, age 14, Crystal Caves, Ryde SeniorCommendation - Ella Whittington, age 13, Totland Fun Pier, The Island Free SchoolAll shortlisted entries were exhibited at the RIBA Awards Evening on Friday 20th May, with a special ceremony taking place to recognise the shortlisted young designers.
