Barn Last ModelThere is nothing better than the extreme change which has transformed this barn into the perfect country house. On the left, is an image of the living space, with a large iron chimney and a chandelier. The decoration of the interior stands out due to the juxtaposition of the original and modern styles.Undertaking a project like this has brought huge satisfaction to the owners, Lindsay and Guy.The couple discovered this place during a walk through the English countryside, and they immediately spotted a big opportunity. The original large space allowed them to produce a two storey home, with half the volume being used for a double height living space. On the ground level they made the most of the large space, utilising it for an open kitchen and generous dining and living spaces, as well as two bedrooms and a bathroom. Wood, stone and marble are the main materials used in the barn, and the decoration is vintage, with a modern touch.Four keys to success:1) When you undertake a renovation, you should always reuse everything that you can, including doors, windows and flooring. This will retain the character of the property and save you money.2) It is important to not over-develop, in terms of creating rooms inside, as you will lose the feeling of spaciousness.3) Wide bay windows allow for a light to flood into the large spaces inside the barn, and offer spectacular views over the landscape.4) The furniture must be in accordance with the space and must compliment the building as a whole. The picture above shows the detail in the main bedroom. There is a large window extending from the floor to the ceiling, and an en-suite bathroom. The children also have a bedroom on this level which they share. This entire floor is carpeted throughout to reduce noise levels and create a warmer feel.Strong points:The kitchen utilises the space effectively, being u-shaped in plan and incorporating a breakfast bar.The dining table central to the open plan space, serves to define the different zones, of the kitchen, dining and living areas - whilst maintaining a feeling of openness and spaciousness. The colours used on the walls and floors throughout the house are neutral in tone to retain the country spirit of the building, and the wooden flooring on the ground floor is original. The staircase connecting the two floors, is made of oak and has a glass banister, making is visually lighter and emphasising the connection between the levels. In the garden there is a raised terrace with outdoor furniture, ideal for entertaining outside and sunbathing on a clear day, whilst gravel landscaping acts as perimeter path.
